Education is above all the greatest tool of empowerment and we should ensure that its full potential is made available to those who may be the targets of intolerance in part because of their powerlessness.

Community-based Partnerships

At Community Tampa Bay, we welcome the opportunity to build partnerships and to promote – together – a community free from discrimination in which every individual is treated with dignity and respect.

Community Tampa Bay & Studio@620

In 2007, Community Tampa Bay partners with Studio@620 to bring Holocaust Survivor Philip Gans to St. Petersburg. Originally from the Netherlands, Mr. Gans and his family were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz when he was 15 years old. For several years now, Mr. Gans has volunteered to educate youth in our Bay area about the Holocaust, about what intolerance can lead to in its most extreme form, and about the importance of standing up against bias and bigotry. Thanks to Community Tampa Bay’s partnership with Studio@620, Mr. Gans’ unforgettable testimonial can now be heard by community members as well.

Community Tampa Bay & Bank of America

In November 2006, three Anytown graduates received the prestigious Bank of America Award for Student Leaders. The award recognizes high school students who tackle critical issues in our community today. The three winners will receive an eight week paid internship with Community Tampa Bay

Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio with Leena Hasbina (third from left) and Jerry Kent (second from right), at the Bank of America Award ceremony, accompanied by Community Tampa Bay staff members Jessica Estevez, Joann McEniry and Josue Hegg.

Community Tampa Bay & Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services

Many refugees living in the Tampa Bay are survivors of ethnic, religious or political persecution.  Taking to heart Rev. Martin Luther King’s words that “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”, Community Tampa Bay and Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services’ Florida Center for Survivors of Torture frequently partner on initiatives aimed at making refugees feel welcome in the Tampa Bay area. Jointly, we also raise awareness in the community and in schools about the refugees’ backgrounds and the conflicts they have left behind.  A recent initiative includes the local screening of the award winning documentary Lost Boys of Sudan.

Respect for All

In October 2006, Community Tampa Bay partnered with Kid City, The Children’s Museum of Tampa, The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and Equality Florida to bring the Respect for All Project to Tampa Bay. Over 100 parents, school staff and social service providers participated in 2 days of workshops on taunting and bullying, racial differences, (perceived) sexual orientation, learning disabilities, religious differences, sexual harassment and other issues that impact how young people view themselves and relate to others. The training provided participants with specific tools to address diversity issues with children and youth in a safe and non-threatening manner.
