This year celebrates the 50th Anniversay of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The popular novel won the Pullitzer Prize and is considered a must read in American literature. The story focuses on racial discrimination and injustice in a fictional Alabama town, but reflects many of the social justice issues faced by those living during the 1930s. Filled with humorous moments, as well as teaching moments, this compelling story illustrates what happens when stereotypes and discrimination go unchallenged.

On what seemed like a normal day at Tampa Bay Tech High School, Destinee Spruell went to Mrs. Young’s class but noticed that the teacher was not feeling well. Destinee knew something was wrong when Mrs. Young did not acknowledge her or any of the other students. At the time, Destinee was wearing a walking cast, but she did not let this stop her from immediately running to the guidance office to inform them of Mrs. Young’s condition. Due to Destinee’s fast response, the school nurse was able to quickly care for Mrs. Young who was having a stroke. The Temple Terrace City Council presented Destinee with the “Do The Right Thing Award” to commend her for her “mature and swift reaction”. Community Tampa Bay™ congratulates Destinee, a 2011 ANYTOWN graduate, for this honor.
